Mason Rook may have just taken the next step in promo with Grayson Waller
Mason Rook isn’t new to this, he’s true to this. The artist formerly known as Will Kroos impressed the one and only John Cena before he ever signed a contract with WWE, and the company hasn’t been shy about making sure we know about it. There’s a reason for that — the big fella is pretty damn good at what he does. The 29-year-old from across the pond came in with a fun catchphrase and plenty of athletic ability despite his size. That’s the kind of thing that will get you over fast in a promotion like WWE. But he was still going to have to square up with stars who can talk him into the ground, and we needed to see if he could survive that kind of encounter. Did he ever. Grayson Waller came back down to NXT and instantly won the championship, all while calling out the entirety of the men’s division. WWE NXT Recap & Reactions (Sep. 15, 2026): Running in Place
It’s been just over two weeks since the top of the NXT card underwent a huge makeover. At Heatwave 16 days ago, five championships changed hands, drastically altering the developmental brand’s outlook as we head into the fall. Among those new champions was former WWE Tag Team Champion Grayson Waller. Shortly after returning to NXT, Grayson essentially talked himself into the NXT Title picture. After ruffling the right feathers and earning himself a spot in the Heatwave main event, Waller won the first singles title of his WWE career in Edinburg, Texas, three Sundays ago. As we all started feeling the Grayson Waller Effect, the time has come for the new champ to have his first #1 contender. Last week, Saquon Shugars, Tony D’Angelo, and Mason Rook won a 6-man tag team main event, qualifying the trio for a triple threat match to determine who gets the first crack at Grayson Waller. New top contender crowned, Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic returns on NXT
When NXT wasn’t being hilariously sad or forcing you to trip balls this evening, there were some noteworthy news items from the latest two hour episode on the CW. First, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will be returning, and the action kicks off next week: The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is BACK!!! 🙌 WOW!! pic.twitter.com/bKcZLTBgPc — WWE (@WWE) September 16, 2026 NXT General Manager Robert Stone said he was looking to enhance the tag team division in the promotion, and the next step in that process will be to revive the Dusty Classic. The sad hilarity of NXT on display
I haven’t been a big fan of pretty much anything NXT has done over the past year or so. When guys like Bron Breakker, Trick Williams, and Oba Femi took off for the main roster, it left a gaping hole in the talent pool that I’m struggling to see anyone fill. It’s gotten so bad, Grayson Waller was sent back down to cut promos about how the men’s division is getting lapped by the women’s division, and then he won the title, more or less proving himself correct. A big part of the problem is they’ve been doing things like this Myles Borne/Tavion Heights story. They were a team, split up, got back together, won titles, and then split up again right after they lost said titles. Borne was the one who turned on Heights, back at Heatwave on Aug. 30. He spent the next couple weeks making like he was truly sorry, leading up to his big in-ring apology on NXT television this week: "I'm sorry" 🙏 A very conflicted conversation between Tavion Heights and Myles Borne! pic.twitter.com/odArDnmHqY — WWE

For the sake of argument and my sanity, I’ll assume everyone reading this answered “yes.” So you’re familiar with the concept of “meta” in which the storytelling is fully aware of genre tropes and expectations. That’s NXT right now. And I don’t have a problem with it. It hit me during a moment I’ll get to later. Those few minutes crystalized for me the idea that NXT is a territory where everyone not only understands wrestling, but watches a lot of it.
