Will this finally be the end of Trick Williams & Baron Corbin’s U.S. title feud?
No offense to Baron Corbin, who has proven to be a reliable, safe pro wrestler in a career that’s almost halfway through its second decade now. I think his return to the badass Lone Wolf gimmick for his WWE return is a smart one, partly because I figure he’s going to be in the upper midcard/main event gatekeeper role he’s been in while feuding with Trick Williams over the United States title since making his comeback this summer. Corbin’s title win at SummerSlam surprised me, but I wasn’t mad about it. It gave him more credibility in what I still believe will be his role for at least the next year or so . It also allowed us to see how Trick Williams — and Yachty — bounced back from the first big stumble on their climb to the top. Now that Yachty helped Williams get the red, white, and blue (will it be fuzzy again, though?) belt back, it seems Triple H and team have one more chapter to tell of the Trick vs. Corbin story. Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report. In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included The Judgment Day beating up El Grande Americano on Raw in Mexico City, Sami Zayn’s latest WWE championship reign lasting longer than seven days, and Danhausen blocking some guy named Mickie from calling Nick Aldis, a lot of fortunes were changed. With that in mind, let’s see whose stock decreased the most this week: Stock Down #3: Randy Orton & Jade Cargill Both of the 3-way Money in the Bank qualifying matches on this week’s SmackDown had the same finish, with a former world champion heel hitting their finishing move on a weaker babyface, only for the third person to steal the pin for the win. SmackDown recap & reactions (Sept. 18, 2026): CM Punk gets some revenge
Image from WWE’s X account SmackDown kicked off tonight in Corpus Christi, Texas, with General Manager Nick Aldis introducing Sami Zayn for a promo. As soon as the faux horns in the new Undisputed WWE Champion’s theme music died down, he was greeted with loud boos. He immediately went into the “Justice for Sami” shtick while holding a belt that still has CM Punk’s side plates. Before long, Johnny Gargano and Candice LaRae made their way to the ring, and you can guess what Johnny Wrestling wants. (Yep, a shot at the title.) To drive home the pointlessness of this altercation, Kevin Owens interrupted and Stunned Gargano. But the next face-off actually led somewhere with Aldis booking KO versus Zayn for the title tonight. Don’t worry, Sami Zayn didn’t lose the WWE title already
At the start of this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Corpus Christi, Texas, Sami Zayn was demanding some respect. He is the WWE champion for a second time, he’s still the last good guy, and he’s still a man of the people, or so he says. Naturally, the first thing you do after a new champion is crowned is figure out his first challenger. This is particularly important in the case of Zayn because his last title reign lasted just nine days. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis even taunted him a bit about maybe only making it to seven this time. That would have hurt. Thankfully, for Zayn, at least, it’s not what happened. Indeed, after Johnny Gargano made his play for a championship match, and then Kevin Owens did the same, Aldis admitted he felt CM Punk deserved a rematch but ultimately booked Zayn vs. Owens for the main event of this week’s show. Kurt Angle picks a modern-day version of TNA’s Main Event Mafia
Before someone asks, yes, it’s been a bit of a slow news day. But we’re wrestling fans, and we’ve been known to enjoy fantasy booking and other speculative exercises. Plus, anything is better than another “Mount Rushmore”, amirite? Just me? Alright, moving on… Olympic gold medalist and WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle did an interview recently (it’s on The Men’s Journal website, but credited to Gambling.com, so…) in which he talked about his TNA stable from the late aughts. Formed in 2008, the Main Event Mafia began as a group of men who’d had multiple World title runs in numerous top companies, with Angle leading Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, Sting, and Booker T. Samoa Joe would join the group’s initial incarnation in 2009, and in 2013 Magnus (aka Nick Aldis) joined its second.
