WWE NXT Recap & Reactions (Sep. 15, 2026): Running in Place
It’s been just over two weeks since the top of the NXT card underwent a huge makeover. At Heatwave 16 days ago, five championships changed hands, drastically altering the developmental brand’s outlook as we head into the fall. Among those new champions was former WWE Tag Team Champion Grayson Waller. Shortly after returning to NXT, Grayson essentially talked himself into the NXT Title picture. After ruffling the right feathers and earning himself a spot in the Heatwave main event, Waller won the first singles title of his WWE career in Edinburg, Texas, three Sundays ago. As we all started feeling the Grayson Waller Effect, the time has come for the new champ to have his first #1 contender. Last week, Saquon Shugars, Tony D’Angelo, and Mason Rook won a 6-man tag team main event, qualifying the trio for a triple threat match to determine who gets the first crack at Grayson Waller. New top contender crowned, Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic returns on NXT
When NXT wasn’t being hilariously sad or forcing you to trip balls this evening, there were some noteworthy news items from the latest two hour episode on the CW. First, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will be returning, and the action kicks off next week: The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is BACK!!! 🙌 WOW!! pic.twitter.com/bKcZLTBgPc — WWE (@WWE) September 16, 2026 NXT General Manager Robert Stone said he was looking to enhance the tag team division in the promotion, and the next step in that process will be to revive the Dusty Classic. Here’s how WWE will find a top contender to Grayson Waller’s NXT championship
It sure feels like the only way to earn a championship match in WWE anymore is by winning some sort of tournament or a multi-person match, and sometimes a series of them. In the case of the NXT championship, currently held by Grayson Waller, that’s exactly what we’re getting. Waller won the title at Heatwave in a Fatal 4-Way, defeating Tony D’Angelo, Cruz Montana, and Zilla Fatu, and now he needs a challenger. Instead of giving D’Angelo a rematch for free, they put together a six-man tag team match on this week’s episode of NXT television, one made after half the men’s roster established their desire to be next in line. NXT General Manager Robert Stone made it simple: D’Angelo & Saquon Shugars & Mason Rook would take on Montana & EK Prosper & Keanu Carver. The winning team would advance to next week’s episode to a triple threat match that would decide who is the next number one contender to Waller’s title.
