Rumor Look Back: March 20 – 26, 2026
Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. Let’s jump right to it. March 20, 2026 According to WrestleVotes, WWE is optimistic that Bron Breakker will return in time for WrestleMania 42. However, there is a backup plan in place just in case he isn’t back for the show. He was back in time, though he wasn’t on the show. So not in time enough to book a match. Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer was told that Royce Keys won’t be part of Jelly Roll’s current angle on SmackDown with Kit Wilson, despite a recent rumor that says otherwise. Dave’s sources did not confirm that Roll is scheduled for a match at WrestleMania 42, even though that appears to be WWE’s direction right now. Keys was not part of that Roll segment. Final Money in the Bank qualifiers are set
WWE has made it through all but two qualifiers for the men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches scheduled for this year’s Money in the Bank premium live event on Oct. 10, 2026, at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Those two triple threat matches will both take place on next week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown. They are: Kevin Owens vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Johnny Gargano They’re getting more star power cooked up for the men’s match, and it only makes sense to go this route after CM Punk qualified this week. Randy Orton is surely going to make his presence felt, as will WWE Champion Sami Zayn. It’s hard to imagine Owens losing this one, interference be damned. Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, Penta, and Punk have already qualified. Tiffany Stratton vs. Tatum Paxley vs. Candice LeRae The story here is LeRae got in because Zayn pushed for it. CM Punk is headed back to the Money in the Bank ladder match
I’ve been preaching about the youth movement WWE has pushed with its Money in the Bank ladder matches this year but there’s only so many young guys in they can push without including some veteran top level talent. That’s how we ended up with a triple threat qualifier featuring CM Punk, GUNTHER, and Finn Balor, which took place in the main event of this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Indianapolis. It was a mad dash to the finish, with no short supply of finishers from all three men. No different than every other qualifier before it, they did a variation of the same beat to end it — one wrestler hits a finish, another comes in to take advantage of it. GUNTHER had a sleeper on Punk when Balor came in with the Coup de Grace, and it was Punk who took advantage before Finn could get back. WWE SmackDown preview (Sept. 25, 2026): CM Punk is too old to be in the Money in the Bank ladder match
SmackDown airs tonight (Sept. 25) with a live show emanating from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the eight episode of SmackDown during the ten week build to Money in the Bank, which takes place on October 10. CM Punk is too old to be in the Money in the Bank ladder match I remember back in 2021 writing about WWE’s very old roster that resulted in the oldest average age for an Elimination Chamber match in history, as well as a men’s 30-man Royal Rumble match that featured 16 wrestlers over 40 years old, and only two participants under 32 years old. That feels like a very long time ago, especially given how WWE is clearly embracing youth with most of the participants in this year’s Money in the Bank ladder matches. So far the men’s side includes Je’Von Evans (22 years old), Bron Breakker (28), and Trick Williams (32) all qualified for the ladder match, with Penta (41) being the only older star in the mix. WWE NXT Recap & Reactions (Sep. 22, 2026): Castling
One of the big stories out of Orlando this past week is the return of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. It has been almost three years since Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker, then known as the Wolf Dogs, knocked off Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes at Vengeance Day 2024 to win the most recent Dusty Cup. NXT GM Robert Stone announced the tournament’s return on last week’s show, and the participants and bracket were gradually released throughout the rest of the week. All in all, the field is pretty NXT-heavy, as to be expected, but stars from Raw, SmackDown, Evolve, and AAA were thrown in for a little added flavor. After Cody Rhodes kicked off the show, narrating yet another fantastic WWE-produced video montage featuring clips of Dusty and past Classic winners, the first match in the tournament kicked things off with a bang. Oba Femi is already back kicking ass and taking names
It’s been obvious for some time now but WWE has its guy in Oba Femi. He was taken out by The Vision on Monday Night Raw just a couple weeks back. It wasn’t clear how long he would sell the effects of the beatdown but we knew it wasn’t going to be too long. It turns out, it was just two weeks, much to the delight of the San Antonio faithful on this week’s episode of Raw. They blew the roof off for him. Je’Von Evans slapped Bron Breakker in the face and got himself a match with one half of the world tag team champions. That match inevitably broke down into a melee that saw The Vision rush in to beat Evans down, leaving him in a 5-v-1 situation. That was until Femi arrived to a thunderous pop and cleared house with ease: OBA!! OBA!! Money in the Bank ladder matches look wide open
WWE will head for the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana for its Money in the Bank premium live event on Sat., Oct. 10, 2026. Now that we’re so close to the show, we nearly have completed fields for the two Money in the Bank ladder matches. Here’s who is in so far, and upcoming qualifiers: Men’s: Bron Breakker vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Trick Williams Upcoming qualifiers: Solo Sikoa vs. Dragon Lee vs. Dominik Mysterio and CM Punk vs. GUNTHER vs. Finn Balor Women’s: Sol Ruca vs. Lola Vice vs. Jacy Jayne Upcoming qualifiers: Iyo Sky vs. La Catalina vs. Roxanne Perez and Charlotte Flair vs. Giulia vs. Lash Legend That leaves just two more qualifiers, one for each division. At least as far as the first participants who have punched their ticket are concerned, it seems clear WWE is going for some new blood possibly breaking into the main event scene. The sad hilarity of NXT on display
I haven’t been a big fan of pretty much anything NXT has done over the past year or so. When guys like Bron Breakker, Trick Williams, and Oba Femi took off for the main roster, it left a gaping hole in the talent pool that I’m struggling to see anyone fill. It’s gotten so bad, Grayson Waller was sent back down to cut promos about how the men’s division is getting lapped by the women’s division, and then he won the title, more or less proving himself correct. A big part of the problem is they’ve been doing things like this Myles Borne/Tavion Heights story. They were a team, split up, got back together, won titles, and then split up again right after they lost said titles. Borne was the one who turned on Heights, back at Heatwave on Aug. 30.
